Ever wondered what it’s like to be an Engineer?  Let Angus, one of our Process Engineers, explain why he likes his role.

What is it like being an engineer?

Being an engineer is a very interesting and rewarding career. Due to the varied range of customers, from oil and gas, food manufacturing and utilities, every day presents new challenges and a new perspective as to how water is used and treated.

The technology we use is fascinating and a more sustainable and environmentally considerate alternative to chemical dosing. It never gets boring seeing the reactions of clients being amazed at the simplicity and innovation of our technology.

What’s your typical day?

My job is incredibly varied. It covers all sorts; from client facing meetings to discuss feasibility, through installation and commissioning and ongoing maintenance of the technology. It’s a good mixture of being on site with my tools and project work in the office.

I do a lot of travelling with the job, covering most of the UK. I have also completed some amazing projects overseas, with more exotic locations coming up in the future.

I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in recent projects in the new industry of Phosphate removal.  This is a really exciting new direction for the company and we have seen some amazing results in trials showing Phosphate removal in excess of 97%, really contributing towards the achievement of the Government’s AMP cycles.

How rewarding do you find your work and what is it like working for Kolina?

Working for Kolina is extremely rewarding. Every day, I finish my day knowing that I have contributed towards a better future for water. I enjoy increasing awareness of the importance of reducing water pollution with our clients and the wider population and highlighting the value of water. This is at the core of what Kolina do. We manage to achieve some great results with water treatment; reducing Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Fats Oils and Grease (FOG) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) by 60-90%.  This results in fantastic savings for our clients when it comes to disposing of their effluent, adding to their environmental management plans and ensuring they remain in consent.

The flexibility that Kolina offers is also great and allows a terrific work-life balance. They really look after us and provide brilliant opportunities, especially when it comes to training. Kolina put a huge emphasis on health and safety at work, with several of us having achieved NEBOSH or IOSH qualifications, Kolina have also been awarded Safe Contractor status.

Finally, I mustn’t forget to mention all the wonderful colleagues who make working for Kolina a career rather than just a job!
